Brown Wimpenny are an 11-piece folk ensemble based in south Manchester. Celebrated by The Quietus for the “energy, eccentricity, communion and joy” inherent to their raucous and powerful live shows, they weave traditional reels, hornpipes and songs from the British Isles and beyond into a web of drones, dense textures and choral harmonies.
Although formal releases are still in the works, Brown Wimpenny's unique sound packed out audiences at 2024’s Green Man Festival, Cambridge Folk Festival and Northgate Folk Festival. With five sold-out headline shows in Manchester, Brown Wimpenny have performed at renowned venues like Factory International and Moth Club, supported Andy Irvine and sold out the Broadside Hacks' famous Folk Club.
While all being involved in various classical, experimental, contemporary noise, post-punk, and electronic projects, these young musicians have converged on traditional music for its beauty and possibility.
