Drawing as a format is a way to explain complex ideas without big words that are often inaccessible. It is metaphorically and idealistically apt because it is universal and cheap and provides no boundaries/edges – anything is/can become drawing (dancing writing speaking singing walking photographing maths science everything) it is easy for it to be collaborative, and it is easy for it to be published. Publication is also a tool for agency. Drawing lends itself to post-structuralist ideas.
The pool of diagrammatic images, signs and symbols is a permanent part of our daily perception. The cognitive act of perceiving, translating and allocating occurs continuously when we compose our thoughts and receive or process information. This process of sense making always happens when establishing relations by drawing connections: The structures of semantic relationships embodied in the anatomical organisation of our brains allows us to interact with others by means of language and behaviour and is a diagrammatic operation per se. Since drawing mediates between perception and reflection, it plays a constitutive role in the emergence, production and communication of knowledge. From my perspective, the genesis of ideas is often directly connected with graphical thinking. […] The drawing of figures thus reveals itself to be one of the oldest of mankind’s cultural techniques, and to this day remains a fundamental instrument of any kind of artistic or scientific practice.
